Dr. Bill Maher is God's Missionary to the handicapped. Born with cerebral palsy and rendered deaf by measles, Dr. Maher's life is a testimony of God's grace to all who know him. He is author of Beyond My Dreams an autobiography of inspiration to those who are afflicted, and many proclaim with joy, " If God can use you, He can use me!" His encouragement to pastors located in many parts of the world has been the spark needed to begin ministries to disabled children and adults. Through his own experiences he is able to identify with many who may feel they have nothing to offer because of their limitations. But by accepting God's grace and submitting to His will, Dr. Maher's accomplishments are a vivid testimony of the truth that I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.
How Will We Look When We Are With Our Savior?
by
Dr. Bill Maher
There is a wonderful promise found in God's Holy Word for those who belong to Christ: "Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is." 1 John 3:2
In our work we see various types of afflicted people. Some people are born with an affliction and still others become afflicted later in life. Before one can claim the promise mentioned in 1 John 3:2, and if one is to receive a new body, a person needs to become one of God's children, through the new birth in Christ Jesus, as found in John 3:16, "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life."
After 49 years in the ministry I imagine one who was afflicted here on earth receiving a new body and being like Christ. I think of my son, William, who at 40 years of age passed away after suffering with cancer. Because William received Christ as his Savior when he was a young lad, he has gone home to be with the Lord. Although we will miss William for a while, his home going was graduation day for him.
God's promise is worth reading again: "Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is." 1 John 3:2 Think of that phrase, "... we shall be like him for we shall see him as he is."
From time to time I will rejoice and recall other born again Christians I have known, who have gone from being afflicted with cerebral palsy to being with Christ, free from that affliction. Still others who have had cognitive limitations are now with Christ, released from their impairment.
But wait a minute-- according to God's Holy Word only those who belong to Christ through the new birth will receive a new body and mind. God made it so simple for any person, young or old, to be saved. Every person must admit they are a sinner and cannot save themselves from that sin. Only by trusting Christ to cleanse us from sin can we be saved. Remember Jesus Christ died in your place at Calvary that you may have the gift of eternal life.
Ask Jesus Christ to save you by His grace, through faith. I trust you will do that today.
On Friday, March 29, 2002, Dr. Bill Maher went home to be with the Lord. Dr. Maher was a wonderful man - whose ministry touched the hearts of many. He will be missed but remembered as one who reflected the Love of his Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ - gone from being afflicted with cerebral palsy to being with Christ, free from [his] affliction.
